How to Increase Website Traffic

I assume you want more visitors to your website. Why else would you be here? Follow my advice and you will probably get tons of traffic to your websites.

1. Make a good website. (Come on kids, you should know that quality comes first. Worry about getting traffic after you make a good website. If you build it, they will come. If you focus too much on the traffic you will forget about what really matters: content.)

2. Ask your friends for links. (They are your friends, so you would expect them to be nice and hand out a few links. Every link counts these days and a great place to start building a good base of incoming links is from your personal friends/family/business partners websites.)

3. Add your website to every search engine. (Although most search engines, ie. Google, will crawl your site automatically it still doesn’t hurt to submit your site to the rest of them.)

4. Submit your site to online directories. (There are countless web directories online, some are free and some are not… take your pick. Remember that it will also benefit your website if you submit it to directories that are about your websites topic.)

5. Join a decent banner exchange program. (This is an easy way to get some extra visitors with out spending a lot of money. Hey, why not try this Banner Exchange.)

6. Use traffic exchanges. (These sites are designed to drive traffic to your website, usually in exchange for your time, money, or traffic in return.)

7. Make a blog. (Blogs are a really good way to get website traffic… Even if your site is not a blog I still recommend making one. You can either make a completley new website and use it to direct traffic or just add a blog section onto your allready established website.)

8. Optimize for search engines or SEO. (This is a huge subject, however well worth your time to learn about. In my opinion this should be high up in your list of things to do to increase your website traffic.)

9. Make link bait. (Link bait is essentialy something on your website that inspires or tricks another website to link to you. Link bait examples: breaking news, disgusting humor, a funny picture, just damn good content, or a free service… Anything to get other people to link to your site, in the end: the more links that point to your website, the better.)

10. Write a newsletter. (Newsletters are a great way to bring back those returning visitors. Let them know that your website still exsits and that there is a reason for them to come back and check it out again.)

11. Submit articles to online article directories. (Write an interesting article and make sure to include a link back to your website at the bottom.)

12. Comment on blogs. (Whether your website is a blog or not, leave comments on your favorite blogs and make sure that your name is a link back to your website.)

13. Participate in online discussion forums. (There are countless forums online… join a few and just add a link to your website in your signature. You will be suprised at how many people check it out if you actually have interesting things to share with the community.)

14. Mimic successful websites. (Find other websites that are similar to yours and learn from them. This doesn’t mean copy and pasting their source code… You can even swallow your pride and ask them for advice.)

15. Try offline advertising. (Radio, television, newspapers, magazines… these days you can advertise websites anywhere that you can possibly think of. Except maybe in the middle of the amazon rain forest.)

16. Have a business card. (Simple but effective. Whenever I am telling someone about what I do, its easiest if I just give them a card with my website address on it. People have a nasty habit of forgetting complicated URLs.)

17. Choose a good domain name. (You might already be past this step, but consider it for your next website. A good domain should be no more than 3 words and also contain a keyword or two for search engine purposes.)

18. Buy some links. (If you have the money to invest, try buying some links on other websites that are similar in content to your website. Getting incoming links can be difficult and buying them is a simple solution.)

19. Make more websites. (Think about it for a second… if you own and operate a huge network of websites then you can make another website and use all of your already established ones to drive traffic to your new one.)

20. Buy other people’s websites. (Don’t have the time to make more websites and expand on your network? Simple solution: buy others websites. )

21. Upload viral videos. (Make a few videos and upload them to Youtube or any other video website, make sure to put your website URL first thing in the description. Video websites are some of the most popular sites on the internet, use them to your advantage.)

22. Advertise on classifieds websites. (Post ads on Craigslist and other popular online classifieds. It’s usually free and search engines have a tendency to rank these ads high in the search results.)

23. Give away something free. (Give your visitors a reason to come back. Free stuff usually makes people go up to to their browser menu and add a nice little bookmark to your site.)

24. Keep track of your stats. (One of the best things you can do to improve your website traffic is analyze where you visitors are coming from, which pages they like the most on your website, what keywords they are using to find you, and so on.)

25. Get a tattoo. (Didn’t you hear the latest trend? Tattooing your website address on your forearm or possibly your forehead could result in a surge of new traffic… or possibly a surge of ridicule.)

26. Think outside the box. (I have to admit that number 25 on my list is a joke… but whatever you do, don’t hesitate to look outside the box and try something crazy or unique to get more visitors to your website.)

27. Advertise on social networking websites. (Facebook, Myspace, Friendster: These massive sites are the all the rave these days and with millions of people using them… there are endless ways to advertise your website for free.)

28. Email other webmasters. (With so much spam destroying our online paradise, being genuine can go a long way. Try sending out some personalized e-mails to other webmasters and ask for a link to your website. Some might be nice, others will probably delete before reading but in my experience, its worth it.)

29. Use a signature in your e-mails. (This is very easy to set up, just add a link to your website in your e-mail signature and everytime you send an e-mail you will be advertising your site.)

30. Answer people’s questions. (Sites like yahoo answers let you post a reply to a question and then leave a link to your website.)

31. Use Meta Tags. (Back in the old days, search engines relied more heavily on meta tags to understand what your website was about.  However, even now in 2008 they are still very important. All of your pages should use meta tags.)

32. Say no to duplicate content. (It is important that your website offers something unique and is not using the same content from another persons website. Duplicate content can land you in the Google jail.)

33. Include images on your site. (Believe it or not, image searches can actually drive a lot of traffic to your website. Make sure to use alt and title tags.)

I’m not done yet… more ways to increase website traffic coming soon!
